This presentation will be given by Dr. Ewen Thomson founder of Marine
Lightning Protection. Ewen was
the primary author of a major revision
to the watercraft section (Chapter 8) in NFPA780-2008,
the lightning protection standard published by the National Fire Protection
Association. This is a major
departure from the previous standard in that it invokes the simple concept:
protect a boat as you would a
building. By placing the bulk of
the lightning conductors on the outside, rather than through the middle of
the boat, we establish a protective conducting cage around the vulnerable
interior. A detailed
discussion of these ideas was published in the October 2007 edition of
Boat US Exchange.
Topics to be covered in the
presentation are:
·
The central problem with the old standard
·
Insight from case studies of damage
·
Concepts in NFPA780-2008: outside the box
